Abstract
Ehrlich ascites Tumor was induced in mice, and the oxygen consumption rate and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity were studied for 9 days, using the remote organs of liver and kidney.
A comparison was made with the normal mice as the control, and the results obtained are summarized as follows:
(1) The oxygen consumption rates, expressed as Q02, in normal groups were 5.16,ul 02/hr./mg DW in liver, and 11.54ju1 02/hr./mg DW in kidney. The Succinic dehydrogenase activity was found 221.98,u1 02/hr./lml 20% homo. in liver, and 517.95,ul 02/hr./1 ml 20% homo. in kidney.
(2) The Q02 and SDH activity both showed a gradual decline as the day passed after the Ehrlich ascites tumor inoculation.
(3) From the above results, the authors had an impression that the respiratory pattern of the remote organs changes gradually into the cancerous metabolism as the tumor develops in the host animal.
